Performance Lab Sleep Review: For deep and more rejuvenating sleep

Written by Martin Ebner, Head PT and Founder of Ebylife

I review Performance Lab Sleep, a low-dose melatonin and serotonin-boosting sleep aid that promises deeper and more rejuvenating sleep.

There are few things in life more frustrating than fighting to keep your eyes open during Zoom meetings, a post-lunch zombie-style slump or struggling to find the energy and motivation to do an evening workout, only to find that when you do finally get into bed, you feel wired and entirely incapable of falling asleep. While admittedly I don’t struggle nearly as often or as much as others to do to nod off, I know all too well the importance of a good night’s sleep.

Not getting enough sleep is just as bad as not getting quality sleep. Our brains and bodies need time to decompress, reset, and rejuvenate themselves lest the cycle of sluggish mornings and mid-afternoon crashes begin again. Getting adequate sleep, both in quantity and quality can affect our mood, athletic performance, cravings, mental clarity, and so much more. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for ways to sleep more soundly at night so that I can feel revitalized and empowered in the mornings, and have more energy to plow through the day. Cue Performance Lab® Sleep. If you like me cherish sleep more than almost anything else and want to secure more of it, Read on!

Overview

According to Performance Lab, Sleep is an all-natural and ultramodern sleep aid that helps you wake in the morning ready to perform. Whether you’re a student, entrepreneur, athlete, or retiree, Sleep by Performance Lab can help you fall asleep faster and wake up fresher than the competition.

Unlike many other sleep supplements and strong medications that can put you to sleep but give you a hard time waking you up the next day, Performance Lab has created a supplement that supports better sleep patterns and promotes nightly mind-body cell renewal for peak next-day performance. As with all of the Performance Lab range, It’s made from 100% all-natural, high-grade nutrients that combine to calm nerves, soothe muscles, and ease sleep-disrupting stress to help you get your best night’s sleep. By extending and improving the deep sleep state, it also supports muscle repair and brain regeneration to help you feel revitalized and fresh.

Ingredients

As with all Performance Lab products, Sleep contains NO soy, egg, fish, shellfish, dairy, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, or other allergens. It recognizes that falling asleep is only half of the battle and contains ingredients to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. It combines ultramodern optimized ingredients including:

CherryPURE® Montmorency Tart Cherry (Melatonin)

Whereas other melatonin supplements supply melatonin in unnatural ways that can cause grogginess, Sleep supplies melatonin from Montmorency Tart Cherry. Montmorency Tart Cherry is the richest natural source of melatonin. It encourages the pineal gland’s natural melatonin production and release which makes for more natural, comfortable, and tranquil sleep.

L-Tryptophan

L-Tryptophan supports a bright daytime mood, calm bedtime sedation, and healthier sleep patterns over time by promoting the synthesis of complementary, sleep-supportive brain chemicals.

Magnesium

Magnesium supports sleep by calming excitable nerve impulses, supporting the soothing muscle relaxation that precedes sleep onset, relaxing vascular smooth muscle cells for a gentle sleep-inducing blood pressure drop, and reducing sleep-disruptive involuntary muscle twitches and limb movements.

Supplement facts

  • Magnesium+ (as Magnesium Bisglycinate and Magnesium [from NutriGenesis®]): 100 mg | 27% Dv

  • Whole Montmorency Tart Cherry (Prunus cerasus) - fruit (as CherryPURE®) (50:1
    concentrated ratio): 500 mg

  • L-Tryptophan: 250 mg

Other Ingredients: NutriCaps® Pullulan Capsule, NuFlow® Rice Concentrate.

The pros

  • It fights the dreaded bedtime blue light. Our phones inhibit the production of melatonin which makes us feel restless and unable to sleep. The Sleep supplement helps to stabilize your circadian rhythm against late-night screen time and irregular sleep patterns.

  • Sleep enhances nightly cell renewal for revitalized next-day performance, whether it’s at a desk or at the gym. This may help athletes to perform better and 9-5ers to have a more productive and energized day! It can also help you to maximize and get the most out of your rest days and weekends.

  • It fills in nutritional gaps like magnesium! Over 60% of adults do not get enough magnesium in their diets. No wonder we have bad sleeping patterns and migraines!

  • Antioxidants help to soothe muscle and joint pain so you wake up feeling less stiff. It may also speed up injury recovery!

  • It’s only $39usd/ £29 for a month’s supply! That’s  $1.25 / £0.95p a day (less than a cup of coffee) to make high-quality sleep a part of your nightly routine.

  • You can modify the dose depending on your mood, energy level and sleep needs.

  • Sleep comes in convenient, easy-to-swallow NutriCaps® made from 100% plant-based pullulan (fermented tapioca). No horse pills stuck in your throat or weird multivitamin burps - digestion is quick and easy. You’ll be off to sleep in no time.

  • Bulk discounts are available!

  • Performance Lab offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if you don’t see results!

The cons

  • Finding the perfect amount of Sleep to take depends on how tired you are and how much time you have to sleep. Since that can differ from person to person, it may take a bit of trial and error to find your perfect dosage for a sound night’s sleep.

  • As with all supplements, it can be extremely difficult to gauge their true efficacy. Avoiding stressful situations, going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, or turning off your phone and other screens in the hours leading up to bedtime are likely to be just as beneficial as any Sleep supplement.

  • Only available for purchase on the Performance Lab website.

Sleep is the single greatest legal performance-enhancing drug that most people are neglecting in sport.

How to take (dosage)

Performance lab recommends taking between 2 to 4 capsules, 30 minutes before hitting the hay each night depending on your level of drowsiness. For best results use daily and consistently.

Interesting facts about sleep

Aside from the obvious benefits of a good night’s sleep, there are a few reasons why you should prioritize your shut-eye. Some of which are both fascinating and absolutely terrifying. Especially if you sleep poorly. According to the Sleep Diplomat, Mr Mathew Walker and I’m quoting here, here are just a few of the interesting facts and benefits of sleep.

Motor-skill learning and memory

Practice does not make perfect. Practice with a night of sleep makes perfect. After 8+ hours of sleep, you are 20-30% better in terms of your skilled performance than you were at the end of your practice session the day before.

Sporting performance

Just one night of fewer than 6 hours of sleep can reduce performance and stamina by as much as 30%. I wouldn't want to be an under-slept boxer!

Obesity

There is a correlation between poor sleep and obesity. The 2 hormones that control appetite and weight are Leptin (which tells your brain you're full) and Ghrelin (which tells you to eat). Unfortunately the latter, Ghrelin ramps up when you're under-slept which can result in an average consumption of an extra 200-300 calories per day. That's 70,000 calories a year or 10-15 lbs.

Cancer risk reduction

There is a strong link between cancer and a lack of sleep (Breast, prostate, bowel). So much so that now any form of night shift work is now classified as a probable carcinogen by the world health organization. Scary!

You cannot catch up on sleep

It's not a bank. You cannot accumulate a debt and then expect to pay it off at the weekend. There is no credit system. You can't bank it. That’s why it’s so important to try and prioritize not only a good night’s sleep but consistent high-quality sleep.

My own experience

I’m going to be totally honest. I don’t have any issues sleeping. Everything I do when I'm awake, with the exception of a fierce coffee addiction, is designed to help me sleep better. I am however very good at my job and I’m more than happy to use my own body as a guinea pig so that you don’t have to. I took Sleep by Performance Lab for 3 months (which is the minimum duration of every supplement trial I do) and with the exception of more intense dreams, which could be a result of better and deeper REM sleep, I can't say with confidence that I noticed too much difference.

Is it necessary? No, but it could help.

It’s really hard to answer this for another person because it all depends on your current sleeping habits or lack thereof. I know some people that could sleep through a hurricane (my snoring wife) and have no problem taking a quick siesta after lunch (my snoring dad). On the other hand, there are people that despite their best efforts can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep, whether it be due to blue light, anxiety and stress or an out-of-whack circadian rhythm.

What I do know is the power of a good night’s rest. Helping your body to “do its thing” by regularly getting high-quality sleep can support and improve you in pretty much every aspect of life. Whether you’re looking to hit a new PR or just want to be happier and live life with more energy. While a sleep-aid supplement such as this isn’t a magic pill and free pass to live life poorly and neglect other aspects that could help you sleep better, If you’ve tried everything else, there is absolutely no harm in trying Sleep by Performance Lab.

Conclusion

Sleep is unquestionably the foundation of good self-care. It helps you excel in all areas of life and it’s absolutely crucial to maintaining a healthy mind and body. As with all Performance Lab supplements, Sleep is designed to help you achieve greater results in whatever it is that you do. There’s no grogginess or addictive properties linked to it. That for me blows pretty much every other sleep supplement out of the water.

Whether you’re struggling to get your required Zzzs or just want to feel more refreshed in the mornings and ready to take on the day, I can recommend Sleep over all the rest.

My overall score: 7/10

Performance Lab is so confident in the quality of their supplements that they offer a full 30-day money-back guarantee if for whatever reason you aren’t fully satisfied.
